Pit-Stop

Essentials

  • Bike Spares - Chain Links, Engine Oil to top up, Spark Plug (check your bike specs), Throttle wire, Deco wire & Brake wire (if needed), Clutch wire. Please do not depend on others.
  • Fuse- Around 3-5 should be carried along. This will also depend on your bike specs.
  • At least a couple of headlamp & brake light bulbs should be carried.
  • Basic tool kit - the one that comes with the bike. Extra tool kits are necessary but all of the riders will not be requiring it. One rider per group should carry one.
  • Extra tube - At least a couple. Expect a high price on the highway. With all modifications and stuff, if your tube is of different size, then carry a spare. If yours is a tubeless tyre carry the kit.
  • If you have foot pumps, then carry it. But again, 2 is enough per group, coz foot pumps tend not to work when required.
  • Bungee cords: Carry some spare in case something falls apart. It can be used to tie it down.
  • Camera + Batt + Charger.
  • Cell Phone + Charger.
  • Carry a multi plug if possible as most hotels have only one plug point and it's difficult to charge at the same time.
  • Carry enough woolens, its going to be cold.
  • First Aid Kit must + any specific medicines you take if prescribed. These might not be available in small towns and cities.
  • Bike up to date Papers Original + Clear Xerox copies. (Blue Book / Smart Card, Pollution certificate, Tax token and insurance).
  • License.
  • Another ID proof - Like Pan Card / Voter ID.
  • Torch + Batt.
  • Insulation tapes should be kept along with 1-2 mtrs of electrical wire.
  • Carry adequate water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Emission Check of the bike – Heard its Rs.2000 fine in and around Delhi.
  • Spirits – It is a not recommended to carry your brand with you on the trip. DO NOT fill your saddle bag and get caught at some checkpoint.
  • LAST BUT MOST IMPORTANT POINT – EVERYONE SHOULD KEEP ADDITIONAL SOCKS, TO HELP EVRYONE GET A GOOD SLEEP

    Bike Preparation...

  • At ground level the most important thing is your tyres and your wheels. Ensure that you have adequate tread on them. I recommend you start the ride with a brand new set of tyres and tubes; you are less likely to face punctures etc.
  • Get the rims balanced (this will prevent breaking of spokes and unnecessary wobbles that could spoil your bike's ride and handling). When you are getting your wheels balanced make sure that the spokes are not protruding from inside the rim. If they are they could puncture the tube from inside. After this, ensure that there is a rubber strip (good condition) around the inside of the rim. When you disassemble the wheels, check the wheel bearings as well.
  • Inspect and make sure that your bike has only genuine RE parts, especially hubs, spokes, rims and other engine components.
  • Get your shock absorbers inspected. They should be in top working order. Check the bushes for the rear shock absorbers and replace if necessary.
  • Check condition of front fork oil seals and replace if needed. Make sure that there is no crack on the fork bottom tube. If your springs have sagged or your main tube has worn out get them replaced.
  • Check the rear swing arm bush and replace if needed.
  • Check your chain and rear sprocket for wear. If you find that there are less than four notch adjustments to go on your chain adjuster cam, replace your chain and both your sprockets.
  • Your bike's clutch is really crucial for this trip, so make sure that your clutch is in good order and adjusted properly without the trace of any drag, slip etc. When you open your clutch cover, also check the primary chain and the adjuster. Do not use any kind of additional insert under the chain adjuster. If the adjuster has reached its limit replace the primary chain.
  • Check your battery and the earthing connections. If you have any history of electrical trouble, be sure that the problem is completely solved. The vibrations, dust and maybe water that riders are likely to encounter on the route could further accentuate existing problems.
  • Check for play in the steering column and replace the ball race joints if necessary.
  • Check all the rubber components like carburetor hose, fuel lines, air filter rubber etc for cracks and tears and replace if in doubt.
  • Check all cables and if found bent of frayed, replace immediately. Do not use oil in friction free cables.
  • Finally tighten all the nuts and bolts and if it is found to slip or the threads are damaged replace the relevant parts.

Engine - This is a very crucial part.

If your bike is working fine let it be. It would be a good idea to do a weekend trip to try it out and see how it behaves. If there is any doubt please visit your reliable mechanic. Do not leave the fixing of your bike to the last min and start the trip with an untested bike.
